Musical Moms!

Finally! An organized activity where there just happens to be another set of same sex parents! We arrived at music class this session and met another two-mom family with a 20 month old son. Its kind of akin to traveling halfway around the globe and you run into somebody who, as it turns out, actually lives two blocks away from you back home! You know they must be out there, you try & convince your child (& yourself) they exist and look at that! They do.
We may well have more in common with an opposite sex couple in attendance, however, its nice to have options ;-)
I should qualify that we have no need, as far as friendships go, to seek out other same sex parents. Our family has several beautiful straight couple family friends who are just as normal as we are. The non-gay people are surprisingly kind, accommodating and inclusive.
I jest.
We really do enjoy relationships with all kinds of people and families. Its what life is all about isn't it? Embracing diversity, learning from each other, enjoying our similarities despite our differences. Even enjoying our differences! How else will we ever learn about the world?! Certainly not through divide and conquer tactics. For there is only one thing that can be learned about that ... it does not work.

I must say, however, it really is just as important to expose our child to other two-mom/two-dad families as it is mom/dad families since she is in a unique position and may identify, at least, on some level with such families. (holyrunonsentence!) Since we are among the "minority", it takes a little more effort to seek out that particular sameness in the community of parenting. So it is exciting to see other families like us in that way, attending activities that we fancy as well.

As it turns out, the two Moms have been fraternizing with a straight couple behind our backs! Its probably only because we haven't been to music class in three weeks!
Sure, the straight couple also has a 20 month old son but surely they'd have befriended us had we attended class more. Right?
Ah who needs 'em.
(ok ok, we do! we want 'em!)
